We work to ensure that public policy and legislation will enhance the tradition of hard-fought-for ILWU jobs on the waterfront and within our waterways, while expanding our reach to our members and other workers who ask for our help in other industries. Sound policies in transportation and growth management preserve the places where we do the work.
We recognize that that carbon intensive transportation industries have an impact on the planet and contribute to global warming. The technology is available for cleaner machinery operated by people. Automation is not efficient and robots do not spend wages in the community. A worker led green jobs revolution is the solution to the climate crisis.
In a low-turnover industry, our workforce is retiring faster than young people can realize and become trained on our docks, ships, barges, tugs, and ferry vessels. Maritime jobs are a good living for young people looking for a living wage alternative, which does not require an expensive college education.
